In Comments Today, President Emphasizes Important Role of Clean Coal Technology in Ensuring U.S. Competitiveness
President Barack Obama today stressed that the United States must develop clean coal technology to help ensure America’s competitiveness in the global marketplace. Appearing before a group of federal lawmakers in Baltimore, President Obama reportedly said, "If we’re going to be going after some of these big markets, they’re going to be looking to see: Is the United States the one that’s developing clean coal technology? Because if we’re not leading, those other countries are going to be leading."
According to reports, President Obama also said, "Nobody has been a bigger promoter of clean coal technology than I have." Today’s remarks follow on the heels of Wednesday night’s State of the Union address where President Obama called for continued investments in clean coal technology.
In response to the President’s remarks, American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) President Steve Miller said:
"We are pleased that President Obama continues to acknowledge the vital role that coal will play in America’s energy future. The coal-fueled electricity industry joins the President in our commitment to ensuring a clean energy future through the use of technologies that have steadily improved air quality over the past decades.
We are also strongly committed to accelerating the deployment of new technologies to capture and safely store CO2 that is already underway. These investments will allow America to use coal—our most abundant domestic fuel—to generate affordable, reliable electricity for millions of American families and businesses, while creating much-needed jobs and spurring our nation’s economic recovery."
